Due to internal conflicts regarding sex and gender, the Green Party Executive hired DIVERSE MATTERS consultants to identify the cause and extent of the conflicts.
Here are the 5 key themes they highlighed in their EDI Audit Report published in May 2022 under “Challenges and areas of development”:
- Management and handling complaints – mistrust in the complaint system with questions about its objectivity and effectiveness
- Harrassment, bullying and other unacceptable behaviours – every participant who took part in the a focus group made comments about the negative impact of the conflict on the Party
- Lack of accountability, leadership and governance to address and embed EDI – while acknowledging that senior leadership within the Party appeared to be committed to EDI, questioned the level of skill, expertise and resilience that existed for leaders to facilitate the difficult changes necesssary for the Party to become more inclusive
- Current Party and Philosophy – some participants expressed a view the Green’s approach to democracry lacks the structure necessary to ensure there is consistency in practice across the Party
- Representation is terms of race – many views shared as to the lack of representation regarding non-white ethnic communities across the Party. In addition, it is felt by some that people of colour in the Party face glass ceilings when attempting to gain high profile roles as employees or members
