caroline lucas is wrong to oppose amending “sex” as a protected characteristic to mean biological sex

After years of keeping her head down and remaining silent about the suspension and expulsion of mostly women party members wrongly and illegally accused of “transphobia”, and in response to a question posted on mumset dated 7th June 2023, Green Party MP for Brighton Pavillion has finally revealed her true position:

” My view is that changing the law so that ‘sex’ is defined as ‘biological sex’ for the purposes of the Equality Act would gravely undermine trans-people’s rights, including to go about their lives in privacy and dignity”.

She added :” I remain of the view that it is both necessary and possible to promote and protect improved trans people’s rights, whilst at the same time defending and advancing hard won women’s rights “.

As demonstrated with the numerous issues raised in the course of a 3 days long debate held in the Scottish Parliament last December and the subsequent demise of Nicola Sturgeon, the would-be implementation of the Scottish Greens/SNP’s Gender Recognition Bill based on transactivists’ demand for self-identification is simply incomptible with respect for key women’s rights and some aspects of safeguarding.

For the only Green MP in the UK to admit that “we are living through a time of great cultural change when it comes to gender and nobody has all the answsers yet” will do nothing to make it easier to open up the debate within the party about THAT question: “what is a woman?”

For the vast majority of Green Party women and their male supporters who have fought hard to defend women’s rights, the very idea that those would be erradicated because of the demands of a tiny minority of men who self- identify as women is not likely to ever be accepted.

The argument put forward by Caroline Lucas that the proposed amendment to the Equality Act to confirm that ” sex” means biological sex would also adversely affect women who are transitioning or those with a gender recognition certificate does deserve further discussion to deal with practical situations such as prisons.

Practical solutions have indeed to be found, but starting with the unscientifc premise that ‘sex’ can be anything but biological is not helping anyone; least of all, genuine transwomen and transmen who need support and indeed, compassion.
