Judging by the damning findings from the May 2022 Equity, Diversity and Inclusivity (EDI) Audit report by Diverse Matters consultants, such sensible advice from the Green Party of England and Wales Code of Conduct adopted at the 2019 Spring Conference seems to have fallen on deaf ears.
Paragrapah 11.3 of the Code of Conduct ” Diversity” read:
“Members must not behave in a discriminatory manner towards someone on the basis of any protected characteristic that person may have ”
Paragraph 13: ” Infighting & Cliques ” adds :
13.1 “Members should not use criticism to hurt, humiliate or belittle, undermine or otherwise attack someone. ” Attack the argument, not the person” is an approach that should be followed in debating situations”
13.2 “Members are entitled to disagree but should not treat others adversely or with discourtesy or open hostility due to political opposition”
The party has had 4 years to ensure that this excellent Code of Conduct was well undertood and duly integrated at all levels, from Local Parties to the Leaderhsip Team.
Members may well ask : why are internal and ideological disagreemeents going so badly wrong, and who will lead the party out of the mess we find ourselves in before it is too late?
