After three failed attempts by identinarians to secure a Conference debate on a definition of transphobia, a seven pages long “Guidance to Identify Queerphobia” inspired by Stonewall and Trans actual. org. uk is now part of the Party’s Code of Conduct.
As stated in the Synopsis of Motion D07 listed on the Agenda for the Spring Conference of 2022 and recorded as “not debated” by the Standing Orders Comittee (SOC), the purpose of the ‘Guidance’ was to enable party bodies to refer to that definition”.
Undaunted by their failure to get the document approved by Conference, the trans activist majority elected to serve on the Green Party Regional Council (GPRC) voted to adopt the document at their quarterly meeting in July 2023. It was then swiftly added to the Framework for Ethics and Conduct which is an integral part of the Code of Conduct,
The ‘Guidance’ has since been enthusiastically implemented by GPRC who appear to have doubled up on imposing No Fault Suspensions in response to formal complaints requesting such sanction against members alleged to have committed the cardinal sin of expressing their view that sex is biological and not to be conflated with gender.
As commented by frustated Ben Foley – trans activist and elected representative on GPRC from the Eastern Region – about the tough job of policing social media platforms: ” The overall result is that a lot of transphobic stuff isn’t removed because it is being added far quicker than anybody can deal with”. And added: ” There are, however, good people who are very dedicated to trying to make sure that some of the more important cases are dealt with by internal process”.
Hoping that the result of the then pending Shahrar Ali versus the Green Party court case would “make it clear that the Party has rights under article 11 of the ECHR ” and that “it mean it can protect its common purpose”, Mr Foley will no doubt reflect on Judge Hellman’s ruling that the Equality Act 2010 and the obligation to protect members from discrimination applies to all political parties.
