women in the green party? it’s complicated…

Green Party Women is the official Special Interest Group (SIG) representing all Green Party Women (GPW). Its membership is estimated to be between 3000 to 4000. As with every official SIGs, it is open to all  member of the Party. In accordance with party policy which is against all discrimination, GPW’s constitution gives the right to vote to all ‘women’ – biological or legally so – and ‘gender variants’.

Co-chairing of this group has swung between transactivists and members who believe that sex is biological. However, no elected transactivists serving on the committee ever completed their 12 months mandate whilst no less than three so-called “gender critical” former co-chairs have found themselves suspended from their membership of the Party due to allegations of transphobia. The latest GPW ‘s co-chair to be suspended is LGB Bristol Councillor Jude English.

Feminist Greens pledge primarily to ” stand up against transphobia within the Green Party and beyond”, although they do not claim their emails to be an official GPEW communication. They aim to advocate and fight for the equality of all women, intersex and non-binary people.

Members invited to join their mailing list (via Action Network) receive regular updates of their campaign. The latest message is a call for help from candidate Zoe Garbett for the London’s Mayoral and Assembly elections. It reads: ‘Feminist Greens are supporting the Green mayoral candidate, and Feminist Green, Zoë Garbett’.

Members of the Feminist Greens believe that the whole of the GPEW membership – estimated to be circa 50000 members – has demonstrated where it stands on trans rights,  quoting conference motions approved in 2016 by 1% of members and since and the election of Feminist Greens party leaders. Exposing and combatting transphobia appears to be the number one priority for this group.

Green Feminists is “an alliance of feminists from political parties and organisations who centre on women’s sex-based rights alongside a green future for our planet and are part of the broader sex-based rights women’s movement”. The group was launched in August 2019.

Whilst not an official Green Party group, supporters of Green Feminists have been championing the Green Women’s Declaration. They have also made representation to the Equality and Human Rights Commission with a request that the GPEW be investigated for sex discrimination as per the Equality Act of 2010.

As Lesbians we are committed to supporting all women who fall under the Lesbian umbrella, that is all women who are same-sex attracted.

As Greens we are committed to maintaining the crucial balance in the interrelated ecosystems that make up our planet. We recognise the need to preserve and care for each element of those ecosystems if we are to maintain the health and sustainability of our planet. This understanding of our planet honours the existence of each individual member.
