In the light of Dr Cass ground breaking “Review of gender identity services for children and young people” and her 10 recommendations, this statement approved by members of the Young Greens at their January 2024 General Meeting should have rang alarm bells. Why didn’t it ?
The statement reads:
Opposition to Government Guidance that Harms Trans People
The Young Greens note that:
● The Tory government has a history of transphobia and demonising trans people.
● The new guidance is guidance, not legislation and schools can choose not to follow it.
The Young Greens believe that:
● Whilst having guidance for schools on trans young people is not wrong itself, the aim of
such guidance should be to support trans young people as they question their gender
and to make sure they are safe.
● Schools outing young people as trans to their parents could have dangerous
consequences for the young person’s wellbeing
● Trans young people should be able to socially transition, which is an entirely reversible
process that may include changing their name or pronouns, and should not be prevented
from doing so by their school or parents.
● The guidance that has been produced repeatedly puts the rights and needs of trans
youth second to the beliefs of parents and teachers.
● The guidance says that schools have “no general duty” to support trans young people in
their social transition and opens the door to deadnaming, misgendering and outing of
trans students, increasing the mistreatment of an already marginalised group in society.
The Young Greens resolve:
● To advocate for the withdrawal of this dangerous guidance and to call for the government
to end its dehumanising of trans people.
● To call for schools to support trans young people and have the guidance and the
procedure in place to do so.
