why ecology and “eco- populism” are incompatible

Ecology provides a wide ranging, cohesive and evidence based explanation of the history of our planet and all living species and, as such, qualifies as a metanarrative. The Green Party’s Philosophical Basis and values are grounded in a humanist ecological metanarrative.

What characterises our post modernist ‘eco populism’ is ‘an incredulity’ towards metanarratives. What is behind Zack Polanski’s post modernist thinking is that all religions or philosophies – Rationalism, Empiricism, Pragmatism, Marxism, Humanism, or Freudian psychology – are essentially tools in the excercise of power by Western, white and heterosexuel men and their oppression of all other identity groups.

Paving the way for Identity Politics, Jacques Derrida (1930-2004) focused on language in the exercise of power which he argued was oppresssive, constructed by oppositions and always taking the form of a positive and a negative.

We here recommend watching Chomsky’s ‘ Brutal critique of Post Modernism’ posted at the end of this post and visit or revisit our 2nd post about the Autumn 2025 Bournemouth conference.

The duty of post modernist activists ( that is our very own ‘zackactivists’ ) therefore is to deconstruct the opposition and overturn the hierarchy at a given moment. If someone, for instance, says something that someone else may interpret as ‘offensive’, that “being offended” feeling must always be considered as “valid”, even if it clearly miscontrues what the speaker intends to communicate.

What is now considered to be ‘valid’ by zackacvivists is not therefore so much the content and meaning of what anyone says, but what members at the receiving end make of it. In other words, the intention of the speaker becomes irrelevant against the impact of who actually says it from their position of any ‘privilege’, as perceived by a member of any ‘oppressed minority’.

With such a minefield of competing identities, we have seen a surge in genuine differences of opinions and disagrements building up within our Party which are invariably interpreted as ‘hate’ or ‘microaggressions’, posing alleged ‘serious risk of reputational damage to the Party’ and ending up in 2022 with a loss of one costly Court case for discrimination ; a second case by former Green Party Women chair Emma Baterman has now been submitted to the Court and will be heard on 12nd February 2025. See here

Post modernist green identinarians have now moved so far away from the basics of our ecological metanarrative, Philosophical Basis and the Party’s green liberal and humanist values that we have seen a complete shut down of freedom of speech and a ruthless silencing of 40 heretics or Greens in Exiles.

How long this descent into such unfair and dysfuntional state of affair will be tolerated by local party who hold the party together and when its members are called upon to commit and actively engage in the campaign for their local elections remains unclear.

‘Events’ however do have a habit of rapidly disrupting the best paid plans and challenge dominant narratives. This is may not be “the end of History”, but the beginning of the end of two decades of wokeism and a captured green movement.
