A record number of 55 candidates applying for 17 internal posts may well be interpreted by friendly observers to this newsworthy internal election as proof of a lively and healthy democracy within the Green Party of England and Wales.
As our very early scrutiny of the list of candidates reveals, sadly, the very opposite seems to be the case as evidence of an orchestated slate of Identity Politics activists makes compelling reading.
Leaving aside the Leadership contest where members have a clear choice between ” eco-populist “/ LGBTIQA + Zack Polanski and Green MPs Adrian Ramsay and Ellie Chows, 9 candidates for the Deputy Leader‘s role would appear to be an unusually crowded contest, compared to the 2022 internal election when only 4 candidates stood for the job.
Another matter of interest is that all but two candidates for the same post happen to be Green Councillors. They are: Frank Adlington-Stringer, Mothin Ali, Thomas Daw , Alex Mace , Rachel Millward, Ani Townsend and Chas Warlow.
Entering last in the race, environmentalist Chas Warlow and leader of the Opposition serving on Richmond Upon Thames Council is not on the list of 107 councillors who have pledged their support for Zack Polanski, whilst the other 7 have expressed their support for his campaign.
Antoinette Fernandez’s statement also demonstrates her support for a strong identinarian social justice agenda. Former councillor, Ash Routh has been playing a key role in implementing the sex discriminatory ” Guide to a definition of Queerphobia ” as a member of the Standing Orders Committee and the Green Party Regional Council.
The effect of such crowded contest – even if the turn out may well to be over the 12.5% mark of the 2022 election – is that under the Single Transferable Vote system, the chances of any one candidate achieving the “quota” or a simple 50% mark + 1 as there is only one post to fill, is highly unlikely. The sheer number of candidates from the trans/identinarian tribe therefore substantially increases the odds that one of their own will almost inevitably get through after counting second, third, fourth etc…preferences.
As for the Chair of the Executive, no such enthusiasm or covert methods. Members have a clear and easy choice to make between Jon Nott, the incumbent trans gender champion and Green Party matriarch Judy Maciejowska.
As we drill down the list of candidates for the other 13 Executive roles, evidence of an orchestrated slate becomes worryingly more obvious than would appear to be the case for the post of Deputy Leader. Our preliminary investigation shows that 30 candidates out of a total of 41 share Polanski’s “eco-populist”, identinarian view of the world.
Should such early findings be confirmed as the election campaign unfolds over the next 26 days, and as per our 2025 Green Light mission, we shall continue to assist members to make an informed choice about candidates who have the skill, experience and determination to “rebuild our Party into a political force that can play a leading role in addressing the climate and ecological crisis and face up to the challenge of the rise of populism”. All shades of populism.
Voting opens on Friday 1st August 2025 and closes on Saturday 30th August. The deadline for receipt of postal ballots is the the last post on Monday September 1st.
