By booting out extreme trans-activists Melanie Earp (12.1% of the vote) and Lindsey McTeer (7.4% of the vote), members of the North West Green Party have put a stop to having their liberal, non sectarian views on sex and gender being misrepresented on the Green Party Regional Council (GPRC).
As recorded in the 131 articles posted on this The Green Light blog since January 2023, such a significant ideological shift has been a long time coming with some of the most kafkaesque and toxic twists and turns imaginable having taken place within the Party over the past decade.
The North West Green Party has thus sent a strong signal to the 9 Regions of the Green Party of England and Wales that “enough is enough”. The battle to wrestle the Party’s narrative and instruments of governance away from Identity Politics and its extreme trans gender faction has begun.
With such rich history of northern Green politics in action and lead by a formidable team of highly experienced campaigners and councillors – many of them women – for three decades, one could have predicted that the battleground for the soul of the party would be won from within the Party’s second largest region.
How did that happen ? The North West region is a vast complex of a mixture of rural and old industrial towns with two thriving metropolitan cities stretching from Cumbria to the Wirral, Chester and Greater Manchester.
With a membership almost as large as that of the London Federation, it has been widely anticipated by experienced regional activists that the election of their new committee at this 2025 Annual General Meeting could be a turning point.
And so the final results for the ballot – supported by OpaVpote – proved them right: out of 5189 voters, 588 members rallied round to exercise their democratic right; 11.3% participation may not seem that great to outsiders, but by Green Party standard, it was very good news.
Historically, less than 1% of the 55000 strong membership of the Party take part in Conference where key national officers such as members of the Standing Orders Committee, the International Committee and the Campaigns Committee – amongst others – are elected by no more than 200 to 300 members…
Most significant amongst the results of this Regional Committee ballot and besides that of Paul Davies for Chair with 75, 5% of the vote was the election of Councillor Amanda Onwuemene from the Wirral and Councillor Kai Taylor from Knowsley to serve as GPRC representatives. Both were sponsored by Green Women’s Declaration and Greens in Exile.
Key officers for the posts of Secretary (Evelyn Leslie), Treasurer (David Jones) Election Returning Officer (Brian Candeland), Local Party Support Officer (Emily Heath) and Internal Communications Officer Helen Wilkie were all elected with more than 90% of the vote.
As a reminder of the importance of GPRC as instrument of governance, its remit – as per the constitution – reads as follows:
GREEN PARTY REGIONAL COUNCIL
There shall be a Green Party Regional Council which shall provide a forum for dialogue between Regions, responsible for keeping under review the general well-being of the Party and for supporting and advising the Green Party Executive, particularly on matters of political strategy. The Regional Council shall have overall responsibility for policy statements between Conferences.
The Regional Council shall have overall responsibility for agreed democratic procedures within the Party.
Crucially, the 2 representatives from each Regions – plus Wales -are also mandated to decide if disciplinary sanctions such as a “No Fault Suspension” or Expulsion are to be invoked in response to allegations of breaches of the Code of Conduct submitted by a complainant.
Given that trans activists and their supporters have had control of GPRC for the past 5 years and have used their constitutional power to purge the Party of members opposed to their sectarianian ideology, the significance of former Greater Manchester Green Party candidate Melanie Earp and Lindsey McTeer’s electoral defeat cannot be underestimated.
This is all the more important as Melanie Earp ( formely known as Horrock ) has served as co-chair of GPRC for the best part of her past mandate in addition to her role as elected member of the Standing Orders Committee. In her capacity as GPRC co-chair, together with her trans-activist Joe Hudson Small from the London Federation, they both have played a key role as members of the Complaints Referral group in setting the purge of heretics in motion.
For the victims of discrimination because of their views on sex and gender, this is the body of 4 members which determines if a complaint with a request that a member be suspended because of a breach of GPRC’s very own “Guidance to a definition of Queerphobia “ warrants approval by the full Council.
With further vacancies still to be filled for GPRC to be fully functional, it is hoped that active members from other Regions and Wales will pick up on the lead from the North West and elect representatives who truly reflect the majority view.
Breaking news ! GPRC’s is to conduct a review of all cases of members on ” No Fault Suspension”. Mitigations have to be sent to regional representatives before 22nd March.
