Following Dr Hilary Cass’ Review which raised the alarm about the lack of scientific evidence for the ‘affirmative appoach’ and the use of puberty blockers adopted by the now closed 6 UK gender identity development clinics (Gids) for children presenting with gender disphoria, Health Minister Wes Streeting has finally given the go ahead to the NHS to conduct a proper trial of those hormone-suppressing drugs.
Up to 250 girls and boys as young as ten will thus be recruited from the NHS gender clinics to join the clinical trial. It is to be conducted by London King’s College. Further details of can be found here.
Confident that the trial had “ethics and safety at heart” and based on advice from leading scientists and doctors, the Health Minister believes that such trial will answer once and for all the question as to whether puberty blockers “ensure harm reduction” for children experiencing gender dysphoria “or not “.
Dr Hilary Cass said in her Review that “due to their potential risks to neurocognitive development, psychosexual development and longer-term bone health, the recommendation is that puberty blockers should not be routinely prescribed and should only be offered under a research protocol”. As one would expect of such respected scientist, she has given her support for the trial, hoping it will put this hugely ideologically driven issue “to bed”.
But, and assuming this NHS clinical trial will indeed cause no harm to any chidlren at all, will the matter ever be put to bed ? Probably not…
Given that the Green Party of England and Wales ( GPEW) has uniquely been unable or unwilling to take a formal position on Dr Hilary Cass’s review in the first place because of deep internal division since its publication in April 2024, one can only speculate as to whether LGBTIQA+ and “transwomen are women” champion Zack Polanski will find it in himself to take the lead and give his full support for this NHS scientific trial.
What is clear is that regardless of Cass’s recommendations, the GPEW remains steadfastly defiant in its commitment to the demands of transgender activists who call for the “end of the discriminatory puberty blocker ban” because “a young trans person should not have to undergo the misery of the wrong puberty”.
As explicitly stated in motion C03 proposed by Cade Hatton, chair of the Disability group entitled ” Reforming Trans Health Care” at the 2025 Autumn 2025 conference here, it is now Party policy to continue with the use puberty blockers “for those of the relevant age “.
For non-members visiting this blog, we reproduce here the relevant paragraph from C03 motion:
RR538 We support children and young people who wish to transition socially without requiring input or medicalisation, and treatment that supports and respects their indentity before they are too old to benefit from it. We support the use of puberty blockers for those who are of a relevant age, for an appropriate amount of time. Gillick competency should continue to be recognised and utilised for the appropriate use of hormones and other treatments. Not only does this give young people the space to decide what their future will look like, but it also reduces the need for many surgeries and other interventions as adults.
