the green party is the ‘woke’ party of the left

As an ideology, ‘woke’ made its entry in the Green Party of England and Wales (GPEW) ten years ago. The time-line of its march towards the ‘capture’ of the Party’s narrative and its instruments of governance can be found here.

As opposed to a green evidence based scientific view of the world, which is the foundation of the ecology movement, ‘woke’ is grounded in the postmodernist concept whereby our understanding of reality is in the context of linguistic and cultural frameworks.

‘Woke’ idea of knowledge therefore is not that it is shaped by science and the study of history, but a social construct of power used oppressively by ‘privileged’ people, and this essentially, through language.

For ‘woke’ left wing activists whose aim is to change society to be fairer for the most disadvantaged, it is imperative that authoritarian measures – including censorship – are applied, as evidenced here.

Rejecting the traditional notion of class and the class struggle, this post-modernist ideology favours group identity as its priority through which all analysis must be filtered. An example of what this means in practice as applied within the GPEW can be found here.

At odds with the original GPEW’s science-based ecology, ‘woke’ identinarians demand of party members that they accept there are many different ‘ways of knowing’ or Truth, and that the ‘lived experience’ of the maginalised in society must take precedence over the empirical methodology of science which they consider to be the oppressors’ tool.

Much of such anti-science world view stems from postmodernist philosopher Michel Foucauld’s notion that society operates on the basis of invisible power structures which benefit the oppressors and those with ‘privileges’.

In a woke individual mind-set, what is needed to change the world is not to control, regulate or overthrow capitalism, but, in effect, carrry out a cultural revolution and the ultimate aims of such revolution is to bring about the end of ‘whiteness’, ‘the patriarchy’ and ‘cis-heteronormality’.

There is nothing remotely related to the envirornment and even less so about the existential threat of global warming to the future of all living species in post-modernist/ identity politics thinking.

Opposed to the liberal and humanist green concept of equality of opportunity, the purpose of the woke cultural revolution is to secure equity in outcome for all oppressed minorities.

All activities undertaken over the past decade by our green woke/social justice warriors has been to primarily aim at managing our instruments of governance, from the Executive, the Regional Council – now merged into one body – and the disciplinary process. Last but not least, Conference where policies are determined by self-appointed participants has been the prime site of their operation. For further details about Confence and democracy in the GPEW, look out for our recent and much visited post here.

Another key factor in the capture of the of the GPEW by ‘woke’ cult followers is the manner with which they have relentlessly promoted policies towards Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and ‘intersectionality’. At the 2025 Autumn Conference 2025 in Bournemouth, no less than 18 motions inspired by post-modernist concepts made it to Plenary sessions and were approved.

Paid up members of the Party may find those motions here.

Many examples of Critical Social Justice language tools used by woke activists taking part in the last Autumn Conference have also been highlighted in our second analysis of the event published 8th November.

Because of a number of exceptional circumstances linked to the legal status of the party -the GPEW with its 1800000 members is a simple association with legally autonomous Local Parties – and the somewhat haphazed development of its internal structures, wokeism found the GPEW to be the perfect home to achieve its ultimate and disruptive purpose within the traditional left.

Whilst much now points to the beginning of the end of wokeism coming from Trump land and the UK where an extreme right wing version of the same Identity Politics cult is raging and where universities are slowly restoring their fundamental mission to promote learning by seeking to restore the freedom to debate, respect and tolerance, the Green Party of England and Wales’ Leadership team and MPs seem to remain oblivious to what is going on as they continue to lend their support to wokeism.
